I was under the impression that price was an issue in the last post. This clearly changes everything.

Honestly after driving both, I would pick the RWD Auto. To me a sporty car with good power is awesome but nothing is worse than when you try and do a hard launch and the front wheels just let out . Or you take a hard turn and try and power out and understeer city. At least with a RWD car you can have some sideways fun. They way things are nowadays just keep it in Manual mode and click your own gears.

That's a stupid comparison. Everyone will pick the Z06

Here's some better options:

Fiesta ST manual or BRZ Automatic? GTI Manual or Mustang GT automatic?

It's not stupid and not everyone would. I personally would take the FieSTa.

You can't compare a 220hp FWD manual car to a 400hp RWD auto car, but your Fiesta/BR-Z comparison is pretty much perfect.

BRZ automatic, or the GTI manual.

Owned both flavors. Front drive, manual. All day. Feel like I was massively missing out for driving the former.

I would have a hard time not going for the car that costs twice as much. But if we keep things under say...40k I think I'd choose fwd mt most of the time. I really truly lust after an integra R, but I'd rock a Ford ST over an auto mustang as well.

Given the choice though, I'd mustang manual in a second over ford STing it up.

How do people make it through winter w/o the ability to drift? Also if price really is no issue, we'll all choose auto (dual clutch) because well, thats all there is in super cars (vette & viper not withstanding).

Not true on everyone would choose auto anything if price was not an issue. Any car I want price is no issue it's either a new Z/28 or something old and awesome.

Tjats why I mentioned the 458. It does depend on the car. Town Car or Abarth? Z06 auto or anything FWD equals Z06.

FRS auto or ST / GTI manual is a better choice.

Really? The Z28. Thats the one new car when price is no issue.

Yep. I like supercars but I don't love them. The Z/28 is more of an everyman's supercar and is the best way to drive the LS7, a 427 cubic inch small block.

Town car or abarth is still a poor comparison, because the Town Car is a piece of junk, RWD or not. If we are comparing two similarly priced, similar classed cars it's a little more interesting. Of course even then it ends up coming down to preference, as I prefer cheap hatchbacks to cheap coupes.

I like RWD as much as the next guy, but I think people get hung up on it for no reason. I've never owned one so I don't know for sure, but I doubt people are sliding around with their tail end out often enough for it to matter. It's always seemed like a silly thing to complain about, FWD is still fun and for the majority of time when you're just commuting it makes little to no difference which wheels are powered, so why bother making a fuss over it? Manual versus Auto affects the car every single time you are in it, so I will always take the manual option if the cars are similar enough.

No you wouldn't. If someone had both sets of keys and said 'which do you want?' you'd take the Z06. You'd be an idiot not to.

Kinja'd!!! Jayhawk Jake > Party-vi

It's close to perfect, but it still will come down to personal preference. I'd rather have a hatchback than a tiny coupe, so I'd pick the Fiesta, manual or not.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't think powertrain configuration matters much at all, transmission choice, driving dynamics, appearance, etc all matter more.

If we made up a hypothetical RWD Fiesta ST that was only available with automatic then we'd have a good comparison. Maybe make it a little more interesting, the hypothetical auto FiST has 30 hp and 30 lb ft of torque more than the manual stock FiST, and if you try to tune the manual one it will literally explode and you'll have to ride a bicycle to work.

The Audi R8 would like a word with you if price is no issue.

I was trying to be as favorable as possible to the rwd auto camp as possible and that's why I picked the Z06. To make it even less purists friendly I chose the convertible. At the end of the day I typically like small light cars better though, especially ones lacking in power. I say this as a GM guy. I love GM and would love a Z06 but at the end of the day I'd want the one that would make smile harder and more often. That's the Fiesta.

The more times I've had this debate the more I realize some people just don't like small motors and don't understand the people who do. I understand it because I like the big motors too but the little ones make me smile more.

My FWD manual car can get sideways. It can't sustain it, but it'll swing it's butt around

In that case I'd still take the manual - I can't STAND the automatic in my E46. It's miserable, even when compared to the boat anchor Peugeot transmission in my old Cherokee.

I would too.

How about in a big boat of a cruiser? Say a Mercedes S-Class (sedan). Would you take a manual FWD S-Class over a RWD automatic?

If it's a light, small, fun car I'm taking manual every time. A big luxury cruiser? I'll take the auto.

Fiesta without a doubt. Insert twisty roads and loose surfaces, so much more fun to drive.

An auto Vette would be ok if i want launch quick off the line, and keep going fast in a straight line, but if i really want to do that i'll get on a flight to where i can drive the Fiesta on the twisties.

This guy gets it. On real b-roads, especially ones with a little gravel, the Z06 is too much. A tiny hot hatch is made for that kind of stuff.

To be honest, I think the comparison sets apart the types of drivers that our fellow commentators are (muchos respect to all) and the type of driving they enjoy most, more than it decides which car is a better choice.

Yeah I think so too. I pretty much figured it would. I have some buddies who just don't get why I'd rather have a lighter car than a heavier high horsepower car. I get why they like the big power stuff but I just know I'd not get to enjoy it as often as I would the little stuff.
